CHOKING There is no getting away from the traffic snarls

It's no secret that Bangalore has traffic problems. Media report after media report has talked about everything from traffic etiquette to road quality. However, with the buck getting passed around to all and sundry, nothing has really been done about the issue. The traffic problem is so immediate that even the Prime Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh, deigned to speak about it when he was in the city to inaugurate the metro rail project.

But what irks Bangaloreans most about traffic? As they weave their way painfully through the city, what is it that most grates at their nerves? RAKESH MEHAR surveys a few city-dwellers on their biggest peeve about namma Bengaluru's streets.

Crossing the road is the biggest problem nowadays. Motorists just don't want to make any space for pedestrians. And on many roads like Cunningham Road, there are no proper pedestrian crossings.

The congestion is what irritates me the most. So many people are always pushed together in such small spaces. And everyone is in such a hurry, so nobody cares about anyone else on the road.

The pollution is the main problem. I am very concerned about the effects it has on my health. There are too many two-wheelers on the streets, all of them adding to the smoke in the air.

On one of the days when there was an autorickshaw strike, the traffic was so smooth. Most of the problems on the road are caused by autos. People need to develop better traffic sense.

For me, the biggest problem is the number of autos on the roads. They are loud and noisy, and give out so much white smoke. Also, the government is not making changes quickly enough.

As a two-wheeler rider, four-wheelers such as lorries are the biggest problem for me, especially in South Bangalore. There should be separate lanes for two- and four-wheelers.

Everything about Bangalore's traffic irritates me. The smoke, the noise, being stuck at every traffic signal for so many minutes. Moreover, the traffic police don't help at all.

Getting to every place late is always a problem. It takes me so long to go anywhere in Bangalore. After all the new one-ways, it takes me at least 45 minutes to go somewhere than it used to.

The pollution irritates me most. We are all stuck in traffic for so many hours, and we are breathing in so much traffic smoke all the time. The pollution in the city is as bad as it can get.
