CHORDS & NOTES
ISHQ HAQIQI
Music Today, Rs.
It is indeed a pleasing change to get back to the roots of modern music, and it is very much an added bonus being floated gently along Rahat Fateh Ali Khan's engaging voice, which ranges from high reaches to very dramatic variations and a natural timbre which presents a soothing bass dialogue. It's like going back in time listening to traditional quawwali through merely the harmonium and the tabla. For fans of the genre and the singer, it is a khhwaab come true.
The philosophical lyrics beautifully confined within the constant 6-beat Dadra tala provide only the beginning of the experience. Further along are the subtle melodies and the transfixing backups, a literal acoustic-treat for the listener. Quawwali is a very refined style of music, which confirms good taste if favoured and this would be a collector's item for the potential listener. The sixth track performed in Punjabi validates the Sufiana. This album simply speaks for itself. Every praise seems too little.
WAR OF THE WORLDS
Sa Re Ga Ma, Rs.199
Could not catch up with Steven Spielberg when he put up his show at a multiplex near you? Well, never mind, He might pay a visit to your home. All you got to do is to pick up a copy of War of the Worlds, now available in a twin VCD pack.
This Steven Spielberg film that comes with his hallmark and shall please the admirers of Tom Cruise. Specially those who converse in Hindi and want their Hollywood heroes to do the same.
The special effects which were so special on the big screen lose some of their grandeur in the VCD with some editing too. But in this film but more than the visuals it is the underlying philosophy that catches attention. The aim of the director and producer being to induce a sense of fear. Fear of the unknown, fear lurking round the bend. And Cruise comes across as a caring man taking on the world to save his family. Of it is a little bit of an estranged family with a son on his own, a daughter who is vulnerable. And a number of calamities lined up. All this to give a free run to the technicians who deliver the good with their action..
The film may not have the overpowering, lasting impact of Minority Report, but you can watch it on a leisurely late evening all by yourself.
