Style wise

Trends that are hot off the international runway don't necessarily make for viable or wearable clothes. But who ever said fashion had to make sense?

For less than one tenth the cost and without having to trudge your bags across many international airports, we've found Indian equivalents of what's haute globally. From gladiator shoes to rouched pants, this is just the beginning.

Jelly Gladiator sandals - These Marc Jacobs Sandals cost $ 250 or £ 300 but on a certain level look suspiciously like the plastic and rubber shoes that Bata and Monda Market come out with!

No charges of plagiarism here, but for approximately £ 299 less you can buy them locally and in many more colours too.

Butterfly Boots - Designer Anna Sui's butterfly boots are knee high boots in tan, chocolate and white with cut outs of butterflies.

These shiny, glimmer boots have wooden heels and come in various combinations of metal finish and leather, but at £450 it's like wearing gold plated shoes.

To copy the same style here, just pin on a crystal studded butterfly or a pretty brooch on your boots. You can take it off whenever you want. If you still want the scalloped top look, ask your mochi to cut the top of your boots to get the same look.

Hoops - Hoops are something almost every Indian woman owns. But new twists internationally in these hoops are the coloured beads or little beads of semi-precious stones like turquoise, jade and amethyst. Go to pot market or your silver smith and ask him to string these beads on a thin silver wire or pick similar looking artificial ones from department stores.

Rouched pants - It's summer in Europe and North America and the bare, tanned look is in. Rouched pants, the ones with the gathers running down the side is back as well, but it's safer to stay away from this piece.

For starters, there are many do's and don'ts associated with these pants -- certain kinds of tops to be worn and only certain kind of footwear. Not only do we end up getting the look all wrong, but also the style is just not right for the traditional voluptuous Indian figure. The safest bet -- a pair of cigarette pants or fitted knee length bermudas that are also big internationally.
