Woven to perfection

Check out designer Anshu Damani's creations

BEST OF TRADITION One of the creations

When exquisite hand block printed weaves meet an amazing palette of vegetable colours, there is bound to be a creative explosion. Add to this Anshu Damani's expertise in juxtaposing block prints with weaves, embroidery and graphics. And what you get is a range of unusual saris and yardage in colours extracted from turmeric roots, lac, madder roots and fruit peels.

In an exhibition titled "Bagh", designer creations in Maheshwari, Chanderi, tussar, georgette, chiffon, crepe, cotton and silk tell a story of craft revival and aesthetic sense. On a vegetable colour palette — from indigo neel, kankambara yellow, pichwai green, vermilion red, charcoal black to sandalwood white — Damani's block designs are so subtly printed that they reveal the texture of the fabric as much as the print.

Each sari is a couture statement — from a sari in Indian orange spattered with amris to pure silks with block printed borders and vegetable dyed Chanderi tissues glinting with gold weave. There are also Maheshwaris with kadis all over or with just a kadi border, in indigo with geometric patterns on the body and traditional motifs in the pallav or `patli pallu'. In some the pallav is embellished with Bhopali embroidery while block prints make the specially woven `skirt border' stand out. As for the yardage, which can double as a sari, it is unique. The proceeds of the exhibition, presented by "Source", will go towards supporting "Ladli", a girl child movement.

The exhibition, on at Taruna Apartments, 2D, Second Floor, Green Haven, 26/62, Third Main Road, Gandhi Nagar, Adyar, concludes today.
