Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary
Rich in biodiversity, the Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary is an integral part of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve, and is contiguous to the Bandipur National Park in Karnataka on the northeast and the Mudumalai Wildlife Sanctuary in Tamil Nadu on the southeast.
Comprising dry and moist deciduous forests in some areas, the sanctuary is home to a number of animals, including elephant, bison, monkey, panther, jungle cat, tiger, wild dog, sambar, leopard and bear.
The sanctuary also has a large number of birds — peacock, owl, babbler, woodpecker, cuckoo and jungle fowl.
There are a number of nearby tourist places that you can visit while on your tour to the Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary. Kalpetta, which is the district headquarters of Wayanad, is famous for its Jain temples.
The Chembra Peak, about 14 km from Kalpetta, is an ideal spot for trekking. You can also tour Edakkal Caves, 12 km from Sultan Bathery. The Glass Temple of Kottamunda, about 22 km from Kalpetta, is another attraction.

Best months to visit: Between November and February
Vegetation: Dry and moist deciduous forests
Mammals: Elephant, tiger, panther, jungle cat, monkey, bison, deer, bear Elephant occupies prime position; interstate seasonal migration of elephants is common. The tiger population is fairly good.
Birds: Peacock, babbler, cuckoo, owl.
Reptiles: Monitor lizard and a variety of snakes.
How to reach: Good roads and rail connectivity to Kozhikode (Calicut), Mysore and Ooty — all within a 110-km radius. Kozhikode is the nearest airport.
Accommodation: Forest rest houses and lodges are available in the vicinity of the park.
