Paisa power and politics

Madhur Bhandarkar, the National Award winning director of those offbeat movies such as "Chandni Bar" and "Page 3", is back with his latest film "Corporate", releasing on Friday. The film is said to be based on two fictitious corporates and deals with the Cola wars. Bhandarkar takes a close look at the corporate world and how multinationals use NGOs and politicians to further their cause.

The film focusses on the battlefields of the power hungry people who corrupt the system. The film sees the transformation of Bipasha Basu from a glam doll to an actress of substance as she plays a business tycoon along with Kay Kay Menon, Raj Babbar and Sameer Dattani. The music is by Shamir Tandon. Can Bhandarkar strike gold once again with "Corporate"?

Laugh riot

"Imsai Arasan 23am Pulikesi", produced by director Shankar and featuring Vadivel in a dual role, is releasing this Saturday, after a battle with the Animal Welfare Board. This historical laugh riot is directed by newcomer Simbudevan, a former journalist. Says Vadivel: "Me, a hero? It is too much! But, the character is not the typical larger-than-life hero you find in Tamil films. Actually, I was not keen on playing the lead role, but after I read the script I readily agreed, as it is a laugh riot." The film has music by Sabesh Murali and camera by Arthur Wilson. Chaste Tamil has been used in the film, which is aimed at the family audience. Monica is the heroine. Says Shankar: "I saw the film and burst out laughing. I am happy with the way it has shaped out and it is my `S Films' third venture."

Mass appeal

It is nearly six months since Vijay faced the camera, as he was going through scripts, trying to choose a good subject to suit his image. Finally, he decided to do yet another remake _ "Pokiri", the Mahesh Babu starrer from Telugu into Tamil. The shooting for the film starts today. Noted choreographer Prabhu Deva is the director and the music is by Mani Sharma. Asin will play the female lead. An action entertainer, the film will have all the elements required to please Vijay fans. "Pokiri" is produced by Ramesh and all areas were sold at a record price. Vijay has once again proved that after Rajnikanth, he is the biggest draw at the Tamil Nadu box-office.

Mind game

Malayalam actor Dileep is trying to shed his `comedy king' image with "Chess", a revenge drama directed by newcomer Raj Babu. "Chess" is an edge-of-the-seat thriller that unfolds in a racy manner. Dileep plays a blind man in a few scenes to take on his adversaries in a mind game. Bhavana plays the heroine and Ashish Vidyarthi the villain. "Chess" is having a simultaneous opening in Chennai at Woodlands this Friday (July 7).
