Take Home Food is for those who yearn for home-cooked delicacies

SIMPLE FARE The menu is changed often

The outlet started 20 years ago serving "only Chinese dishes." Now, it's a take-away counter that offers home cooked `nadan food.' Mouth-watering dishes like duck roast, Syrian beef fry, appam and mutton stew are some of the many dishes offered.

`Take Home Food' in Kowdiar attracts many a customer to try their fare. Their only advertisement is word-of-mouth publicity and the aroma of the food that attracts passers by.

Run by B.S. Johny who enjoys whipping up dishes for his family and friends, he decided to turn to good old Indian food when other fast food centres in the city began offering Chinese food.

The counter only sells food they prepare. There are no suppliers.

"Most of the dishes are prepared by my wife, Sini, or me sans preservatives. In fact, Sini was a novice in cookery. She learnt through trial and error and is now an excellent cook," says Johny.

Packed lunch

Packed lunches are popular. Rice plus seven side dishes are packed in a container ready for the customer to pick up.

"It's normally office goers who pick it up for lunch. We try to make it a point not to serve the same dish twice in a week," he says.

For tea, they have a host of `nadan' eats. Teatime bites like `Vattayappam,' banana fritters, `ellayappam,' and `parippu vada' are available. Eats that are fast being forgotten such as `sukhiyan,' `kozhikatta,' `ozhappam' and `kinnethappam' are also available.

Dinnertime is when the crowd gathers. "Nadan kozhi roast, Chicken Chengkotta (which is their own recipe) and Mutton Chettinadu are popular," says Johny.

The menu is changed on a daily basis.

"We keep trying out and experimenting with dishes. When I go to another restaurant, I try their speciality. I will try and gauge the ingredients added and then prepare the dish myself, often adding other ingredients to make it tastier. Chicken Chengkotta is a perfect example," he says with a grin.

The counter is open from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m.

The counter is closed on Mondays.
