Take a coconut break
|
Will superstitious beliefs ever end, asks K. Velayudham
|
Despite attempts to eradicate superstition, it continues to prevail. I have no problem as long as people indulge in it in their homes or establishments. The trouble starts when others are made to suffer. Take the habit of breaking coconuts on Friday evenings. Of late, almost every shop owner breaks coconuts on the road on Friday evenings. This inconveniences people no end.
The same is the case with people smashing pumpkins on the road to ward off the evil eye. It has been condemned by so many people but the practice continues to flourish. What people don't realise is that their belief can cause harm to others. Ask the pedestrians and cyclists who have accidentally run over broken coconut shells. They pierce the feet and tyres. Also, they result in litter on the road.
People must know the consequences of their activities.
