The next edition of "Lights On" will feature director Aparna Sen in conversation with actor Dhritiman Chatterji on July 12, 6.30 p.m., at Sree, Sathyam Cinemas. The screening of her film, 36 Chowringhee Lane, will precede the discussion.
The film tells the story of an Anglo-Indian schoolteacher, Violet Stoneham, who lives a lonely life in her single room flat at 36 Chowringhee Lane in Calcutta, after the marriage of her daughter Rosemary. She has a tomcat for company. She is thrilled when a former student, Nandita Roy, comes visiting with her boyfriend Samaresh Moitra. Samaresh is an author and would like to write his next novel in the solitude of Violet's flat. Violet welcomes him. When he likes her antique record player, she gifts it to him. Violet hopes to become part of a family again. It is Christmas and she hopes to surprise them with a cake she bakes. But she does not know what's in store for her.
