SANCTUARY SPOTLIGHT
Satkosia Gorge Sanctuary
Started in 1976, Satkosia Gorge is one of the minor sanctuaries of Orissa. The gorge is formed by the river Mahanadi, which cuts across the Eastern Ghats. On the south of the river are hills and on the north are the mountainous parts of Athamallik and Angul sub-divisions. The sanctuary is spread over four districts — Angul, Budh, Cuttack and Nayagarh — and covers an area of 795.52 sq km.
The sanctuary has captured the imagination of scientists, who head to the Gharial Research and Conservation Unit at Tikarapada, and Nature lovers alike.
The attraction here is the 22-km-long gorge, which demarcates the area into two parts, accessible from Nayagarh and Budh.
The sanctuary supports moist deciduous, dry deciduous and moist peninsular sal forests.
If you are looking to drink in the scenic beauty of this place, head to Tikarapada. Located in the middle of the gorge, the view of the surrounding landscape is best when seen from here. The Basipalli sanctuary lies adjoining the gorge.
When to go: Round the year
Wildlife: Tiger, leopard, elephant, gaur, sambar, spotted deer, mouse deer, nilgai, four-horned antelope and sloth bear. Wild dogs used to be sighted often. Many resident birds frequent this place. Reptiles like the gharial, mugger crocodile, fresh water turtle and poisonous and non-poisonous snakes can also be sighted.
Other attractions: The river Mahanadi that flows nearby, the Gharial Research and Conservation Unit at Tikarapada, undulating hills, trekking routes and boating.
