Feast of Japanese films

A four-day Japanese film festival will be held from July 10

The Consulate-General of Japan and the Indo Cine Appreciation Foundation are organising a Japanese film festival from July 10-13, 6.30 p.m., at the South Indian Film Chamber of Commerce auditorium, Anna Salai.

The films to be screened include When The Rain Lifts, Like Asura, Fifteen and The River With No Bridge.

On July 10, After The Rain will be screened. The film, directed by Takashi Koizumi, is based on Shugoro Yamamoto, a short story written by legendary Japanese director Akira Kurosawa. It tells the story of travellers who are stranded in an inn in a castle town, as the river is in spate. Among them are Ihei Misawa, a masterless samurai and his wife. Events lead him to becoming the fencing master of Shigeaki, lord of the domain. But the local fencing masters are not happy with the appointment. One day, he inadvertently pushes the Shigeaki into the pond. What happens next?

Like Asura, to be screened on July 11, revolves around four sisters of the Takezawa family. They gather for the first time in a long while on learning their father has a mistress and a love child. They decide to keep the affair from their mother. One day their mother dies. After the funeral, they discover a letter written by their mom to a newspaper talking about modern day love affairs. It then dawns on them that she knew all along about her husband's affair and forgave him.

Fifteen (July 12) delves into the psyche of a boy from a junior high school. He does not like to go to school and sets out one day to see a 7,000-year-old cedar tree. On the way, many interesting events.

On July 13, The River With No Bridge will be screened. The protagonists of the film are Hatanaka Seitaro and his brother Koji, who belong to the `eta' class (which was considered unclean and discriminated against in feudal times). The trials and tribulations the two face in their effort to survive forms the crux of the film, which is directed by Yoichi Higashi.

Seating will be on a first-come-first-served basis. Call 24323860 for details.
