Musical fare

"Some Enchanted Evening" in aid of cancer patients

You needn't open your umbrellas or tank up on laughing gas, but you can sing along with Mary Poppins anyway. Because when Young Nation, a musical and theatre group, presents "Some Enchanted Evening" at the Music Academy this Thursday, it will probably be a struggle to keep your mouth zipped or your feet from tapping in time with the Fiddler on the Roof.

The musical extravaganza will be putting together famous favourites from the most enthralling musicals of our time, including "South Pacific", "Mary Poppins", "Fiddler on the Roof", "Jungle Book", "My Fair Lady", "Cats", "Pirates of Penzance", "Show Boat", "Wizard of Oz" and "Paint Your Wagon". You're unlikely to find a more painless or delightful way to take a trip down memory lane. And you'll be in good company. Because even if your warbling is embarrassingly off key, there'll still be a choir of 60 talented singers and dancers to keep the lady in the neighbouring seat from pounding you into something not quite so Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious. (Whew!)

The show includes an age group of 5 to 50, all performing with a live band. Appropriately enough, the songs of your childhood are being used to raise money for children. The proceeds of Young Nation's previous show, Hans Christian Anderson's "The Little Mermaid", helped treat four children — all of whom were under 5 years old — at CMC Vellore through V Can Help. This year too, the show is being staged to raise money for the organisation.

A registered Cancer Trust Foundation, V Can Help focusses mainly on counselling family members of patients, conducting detection camps in Chennai and the surrounding rural areas, and, most importantly, identifying and supporting cancer patients who can't afford treatment. In April 2006, the organisation opened a Cancer Pain Relief and Palliative Care City Centre at Kilpauk to help Jeevodhaya administer pain relief to terminally ill patients.

This show has been conceptualised by Martha Howie — who founded Young Nation with the objective of identifying and training young talent — and Solomon Howie along with Tony Davids. Andrea Jacob has choreographed it, and the band is led by Arul Siromoney, conductor and choir master at St. Andrew's Kirk.

"Some Enchanted Evening" will be staged at 7 p.m. on July 13, at the Music Academy. There will also be special shows for school and college students on July 12 and July 13. Tickets are available at Odyssey, Landmark, Musee Musicals, Pro Music and Connexions. For more details, contact 26412865, 26611765 or 98840 52865.
