I am a man whose hairline is receding. How do I counter my problem?
Anjan Sen, Delhi
A receding hairline could be a hereditary issue. However, efforts can be made to prevent this problem to some extent by following the following measures. Massage your head with Maha Bhringraj oil. Whenever you wash your hair, use a mild shampoo with a balanced PH value. The next measure would be to keep your hair dandruff free as it is a potent cause of hair loss. Now pay attention to your diet as nutrition plays an important role in maintaining healthy hair. Take zinc and iron supplements as well as Vitamins A, B complex and C. Include lots of amla and sprouts in your diet and make sure to eat plenty of green vegetables, salads and fruits to give lustre to the hair as well as to add to its growth.
Is there a cure for acne? What can be done to prevent acne from occurring? What causes acne?
Supriya Singh, Meerut
Yes, there is a cure for acne. Cleanse your face, thoroughly and regularly, in order to keep it dirt free as it is dirt and grime which clog the pores and make acne worse. In addition, use of an oil-free moisturiser is essential to prevent the skin from getting greasy and attracting more dirt. Thus, regular cleansing and moisturising are the best solutions for reduction and removal of acne. Our bodies continually create new cells and get rid of dead cells. The three essential functions of the human body are to consume elements like food, water, air, etc, absorb the nutrients from it, which assists in creating new cells, and remove the toxic wastes. The body removes waste via the digestive system, the lungs and the skin. If the digestive system is sluggish, waste may have to be expelled via the skin, which leads to blocked pores and acne.
I've noticed myself gaining weight now that I'm out of college. What tips do you have?
Varun Banthia, Bangalore
Your diet should be based on sound nutritional principles, wherein your nutritional needs are ascertained by examining your likes/dislikes, eating patterns and socio-cultural background. Paying attention to dietary choices and incorporating exercise into your routine can help sustain behaviours that maintain weight loss. Keep in mind that as we age, our metabolism slows down, so maintaining a healthy weight can become trickier. Try these tips: Make a food diary. A daily record enables you to follow your progress over a period of time. Use whole pulses, grams and cereals instead of refined one and eatfresh green vegetables, fruits and sprouts. Use skimmed milk for tea, coffee, curd and paneer. Include beverages like limewater, vegetable juice, clear soups, and buttermilk. Avoid aerated drinks and alcohol. Drink 10 to 12 glasses of water every day. Snacks on fruits, roasted channa, fruit salads, dalia or upma with vegetables. Don't skip meals and snacks. Instead, have smaller, more frequent meals at regular intervals. Have a light dinner early in the evening so as to give yourself a 2-3 hour gap before sleeping. Try to incorporate simple activities into your routine and work out up to 30 minutes daily sustained.
