CRYING FOR ATTENTION The Noyyal
A river that once supported civilisation is now crying for help. The Noyyal once flowed sprightly through forests, fields and tanks in the city before joining the Cauvery at Noyyal village in Karur district.
Now, encroachments, choked canals and effluents have seen it fall from grace.
Calling everyone
In an effort to revive the river, Siruthuli, a movement that was launched to clean up Coimbatore's water bodies, is launching Noyyallukku Nooru, a fundraiser.
Eventually, Siruthuli plans to trace the Noyyal and rejuvenate the original path.
Actor Suriya will launch the programme at PSG College of Technology grounds at 6 p.m. tomorrow (July 14).
Earlier in the day, he will interact with the staff at CRI Pumps and students at PSG College of Technology and Hindustan College of Arts and Science.
Then, he will visit VOC Park, where Pachai Nayagi, the Kalpakavriksha of Coimbatore is planted.
Says Suriya: "I am not associating with this cause just because I hail from the city. I feel this effort will be spoken about by future generations. It will be remembered. Every other city has a river. It is sad that we have neglected the river that used to flow here. This effort shows that if we have the will, we can change things. It will take time but we will be proud about the result. People are already doing their bit and I want to be part of such change."
Music, dance and food
The evening will see people swaying to melodies performed by Lakshman Sruthi's orchestra and sleek dance movements by Edwin's Footloose.
A food court set up by Sree Annapoorna Group of Companies will pamper your tastebuds.
If you want to contribute, check out the drop boxes that will be put up in places where people gather in large numbers. Else drop your contributions at the Siruthuli office at 308, Raheja Centre, Avanashi Road. Call 0422-4333301/02 for details.
