A chip of the old block

Meet Sharanya Bhagyaraj, whose successful Tamil debut film may soon be remade in Telugu

She is contemporary, hi-tech, down-to-earth and there's a whiff of adventure that is impossible to ignore. Above all, she's pretty, talented and her first Tamil film Parijatham has bloomed and plans are afoot to remake it in Telugu.

Daughter of actors Poornima and K. Bhagyaraj, Sharanya says, "I always wanted to be an actress and waited for the right time to break the news to my parents.

One day I saw my father's interview in a magazine and he opined that his son was more inclined towards films. I was livid and had an argument about how he could not speak for me and that's how they got to know about my interest in movies."

Once she had made her intentions very clear, it wasn't an easy task to get a break. Her father made her go through the mandatory photo sessions, dialogue delivery classes et al.

She adds, "Like any other aspiring artiste, I had the aptitude and zeal so I patiently waited for my turn till Parijatham happened. Dad is a considered one of the best screenplay writers in South India and everyone wants to be launched with his script. I just grabbed the offer."

Bhagyaraj and Poornima have been very encouraging and supportive to their children and Sharanya considers herself blessed to have such an amazing family.

Sharanya's brother is an artiste too and he is working in a film titled Chakra katti produced by Dhanu and directed by Kala Prabhu. A graduate in visual communications, the actress says she has always been creatively inclined and adds, "I just can't sit at home waiting for my film to release, I need another career to keep my restless mind occupied and also something to fall back on in later stages of my life."

Sharanya had established a studio called Cutting Edge in Chennai recently. However, it is important to note that people and not just equipment hold the key to success.

So with her friends Saraswathi, Vamsi Krishna, Vivek Harsha all students of visual communications, they have resolved to offer high-end special effects, editing, graphics and design for the film industry.

Her partner Saraswathi says, "The development of powerful software tools along with state-of-the-art computer hardware technology has accelerated the trend of graphics and design.

We are currently working on a Malayalam film and a few trailors. We even work on banners, hoardings, film titles, audio covers, visiting cards, stationary and brochures."

Meanwhile, a very confident Sharanya promises to offer the best and quality service to her clients. Cinema is Sharanya's chosen vocation for now.

She signs off, "I carry my family name with me, I must admit, though not with any arrogance. But it does add to my self-worth. I want to do all kinds of films in as many languages as possible. I'll be around as long as I'm challenged by what I have to do."
