Festive fervour

Monsoon Festival and Children's Mela at DakshinaChitra

Two South Indian festivals — Ayyanar and Adiperukku — will be celebrated from July 21-30 at DakshinaChitra. Adiperukku celebrated on the 18th day of the Tamil month of Adi pays tribute to the life sustaining force of water. The festival also welcomes the much-awaited monsoon. People living on the banks of the Cauvery offer pujas to the river. Ayyanar, the folk deity of Tamil Nadu, has a shrine on the outskirts of every village.

During the 10-day long celebration, visitors will get to watch Tappattam by Ranga Rajan and troupe from Thanjavur. A procession with people carrying offerings in terracotta to the Ayyanar shrine at DakshinaChitra will be taken out on July 30. During the procession, Oyilattam and Devarattam will be performed. You can join the procession and enjoy the rustic ambience and sweet pongal. The festival will culminate with the sowing of the navadanyam (nine cereals) for Adiperukku. The event is sponsored by Tamil Nadu Tourism.

The festive mood will be enhanced by a Children's Mela from July 18 to August 18. Children visiting DakshinaChitra during these days can learn how to make small clay figures such as lizards and elephants from the potter. The figures can be taken home and baked on an ordinary gas stove.

There will be a theme mela, "Kerala - In Focus", where children will have an opportunity to catch a glimpse of Kerala through special programmes, activities and exhibitions related to the State.

Besides, bullock cart rides, games, puppet shows and street plays promise great fun for children.

Schools and families can participate in the mela for which prior booking has to be made.
