A lecture on folklore traditions of India on July 19
|
The National Folklore Support Centre (NFSC) is organising a public lecture series titled "What is Freedom?" Organised partly as NFSC's documentation of folklore, this series aims to show folklore material as subjects of philosophy.
The third lecture of the series will be delivered by M.D. Muthukumaraswamy, director, NFSC, Chennai, on July 19, 5.30 p.m., at the Centre, 505, 5th Floor, Kaveri Complex, 96, Mahatma Gandhi Road, Nungambakkam.
He will talk on "Self as inter-textual construct," focussing on folk theatre in constructing the `selves' of the villagers. He will present a picture of what it means to grow up in a village in North Tamil Nadu.
On July 21, 5.30 p.m., a documentary titled "Pali Peedam (Altar)" by Leela Manimekalai. The film is an ethnographic intervention on the prevailing customs and traditions of the Kambalathu Naicker community in the central parts of Tamil Nadu.
The screening will be followed with a discussion with the filmmaker.
