Beauty in a cluster

The Kaffir Lily needs little attention but rewards a gardener with its attractive blooms

BRIGHT SHOW The orange-red flowers of Clivia or Kaffir Lily

The Kaffir Lily, also known as Clivia, is a bulbous, hardy plant, often surviving for generations. The older plants do just as well as the younger ones. It is one of the most reliable of plants. The frequent show of a cluster of small orange-red lilies at the crown is ample reward for a plant-lover's efforts to nurture the species. The leaves are thick and strap-like and a beautiful deep green that perfectly offsets the bright flowers.

Early spring to summer is best for flowering, though irregular rains can also bring on the flowers. Just before the cooler months, watering can be reduced, which will automatically rest the plant, rejuvenating it for the following spell of blooms. Watering can be increased again later, never to the point of soggy conditions that would lead to rot. A little bit of chemical fertilizer will certainly help the plant to flower. A few bugs can cause leaf spots, but they do not really harm the plant. Firm water spraying of the leaves can deal with this problem. Re-potting needs to be done every three years or earlier to give the plant enough space. A bright spot is essential, without harsh sun.

The Kaffir Lily is certainly worth the minimal attention it asks for. It is an asset even if a garden is small or there is only a tiny balcony where it is raised.
