Triple treat

B-Live had some of the world's best acts

Percussionist Ben Mitchell finds it intimidating to play bongo "in the land of tabla". Back home in Brighton he is part of ensembles Mr Hermano, Sao Beniter, Mitchell and Dew Boys. Last weekend nevertheless he did have a blast with his Latin rhythm, jamming with Grammy nominated songwriter and guitarist Gary Lucas and DJ Cosmo of New York. The event was the Bacardi B-Live tour.

Revellers got to sample house, electro, Latin and disco with a generous helping of riffs. "This is the only city in the country where we are performing," says Gary Lucas. Pretty sullen with Syd Barrett's demise, "he was a remarkable person. Astronomy Domine my MP3 version is a tribute to Syd Barrett," says Lucas who has written for John Osborne and Eric Clapton. The `legendary leftfield guitarist' lined up some classic riff solos to go with new wave remixes of Donna Summer and Chemical Brothers from DJ Cosmo.

"The line up for the event features psychedelic dance oriented music making it futuristic," says DJ Cosmo. Currently in London, DJ Cosmo finds the clubbing scene, "challenging." The deejay, who has been collaborating with international artistes, is enthused by Indian music. "I like bhangra. It's very big in London. I have also heard Asian Dub Foundation and Ravi Shankar of course," she says.

And what followed was a feel good beat not exactly danceable. Revellers wished the party was on for some more time since it closed much before the time line that even pubs in the city followed, as they dashed back to the pubs for the after party. Very surprising in a city where the underground culture is rife.
