The older dog

Our love and care towards the pet should extend to its old age

OWNER'S LOVE We need to rethink our attitude towards older pets

You will be amazed at how many people want to abandon their older dog pets at our animal shelter! Everyday we are forced to counsel people about the tragic end to their devoted pet's life if it lands up on the street or in an animal shelter. What amazes me is the complete disregard for the aged. Others are too sentimental to face death. Be it older family member or older pet, we really need to rethink our attitudes. Nearing death due to old age, they need understanding and care to make the end easy- not abandonment and desertion. Take a look at one common conversation:

Caller 1: I would like to give you my dog.

Blue Cross: Is there a reason for you to want to do this? Blue Cross is a rescue home and shelter for homeless animals, sick, injured or dying from the street.

Caller 1: But my dog is very old and sick and if you don't take it, it will end up home less on the street anyway. Besides I want to get a puppy from you instead.

Blue Cross: Sorry Sir, we are not a dog exchange. If you have a pet it is yours for life. And if you feel otherwise, better not get a pet at all!

Caller 1: Then what are you all doing, all your big animal talk and you cannot do even this. Call Amala, I will talk to her.

Blue Cross: Sir this is Amala speaking and I assure you it is your duty under all Indian rules, regulations and Constitution that you must look after your pet till the day it dies. An animal shelter is no place to leave an older dog that needs special care. Besides if you cannot do this for your dog, I worry about your parents and elders- what will happen to them with your attitude?"

Caller 1 hangs up phone after muttering a few abuses. Next day old pet dog is found tied to Blue Cross gate during the night.

This is a daily occurrence at our animal shelter showing how inconsiderate some people can be to the needs of the aged. So wherever and whenever possible I request Animal Talk readers to spread the word that a pet is for life! Here are some useful tips for caring for an older pet, which we find if they followed death comes gently and naturally and everyone is prepared for it - both pet and owner.

Tips for caring for an older pet

*An older pet needs quiet and airy space, as it will rest more

*Bedding is essential as the floor could be cold and hard

*Smaller, softer meals at frequent intervals as capacity reduces

*Nutrition supplements and proper veterinary support when needed

*Feed at a raised height so it does not have to stoop

*Less walking and exercise, but some movement is a must

*Check for bedsores and ensure bedding is always dry

*In case of incontinence, provide a raised platform with legs and nylon netting. Any urine will drain below immediately
