A filmy note

Bollywood emerged a hot favourite with these fashion graduates

A riot of colours and medley of silhouettes? Exactly what students of Inter National Institute of Fashion Design here decided to showcase for Genesis '06 last weekend. Skirts with asymmetrical hemlines, cigarette pants along with structured ghagras found equal takers . While traditional fabrics like banarasi and chiffon ruled.

Inspirations ranged from the smooth Caf'eteria in dark brown shade of espresso and neutral note of latte to the Mood Swings interpreted in red, blue and green. For themes, apart from a `diamonds are forever'-inspired impressive party line in black with embellishment in stone and a Spring Summer Collection '06 in shades on yellow, saffron and orange taking an inspiration from the sun. Most of the fashion graduates took a filmy note. The predominant hue was of Bollywood.

Enter Ramgadh Ki Chameli a thorough filmy line coloured in bold hues taken from the Kareena Kapoor starrer. Masala Popcorn was yet another collection drenched in a mixed tang taken from Janasheen, Don and rest of masala hits.

Winning designs were judged as Aditya Varma's collection in cotton blend and lightweight silk, which bagged the Best Jury Award. The `un constructed' silhouette in bronze with a hint of red, spun the story of an extra terrestrial girl who emerges from a rotten egg fallen off alien space on earth.

"It reflects transformation of the alien," says Aditya explaining the progression of tones.

The final year BSc Fashion Designing student plans to work for celluloid. "I would like to design for Mahesh Babu and Hrithik Roshan," he says.

Victorian Fiona from Aarti Gangwane won the Best Design Collection award. Replete with laces, frills and pleats in silk, satin and net, the collection took off from an era when sewing machine was invented.

The design students toiled for over six weeks to put the lines together but substantial delay in the show, technical snags and an unprofessional approach by organisers made it a tiresome fare.
