The transition phase
The article pertaining to mid-life transition ("Midlife reality", June 24) had explained the mindset of the people of today's era. One needs to have a goal and accordingly plan one's professional life. The goal should be attainable and at the same time, match the economic status of the individual. Today, employers (IT companies) allow long breaks from work without pay. But one needs to be able to sustain oneself financially during these periods. Thus it is the individual's mental frame that matters most during the transition phase. There are many avenues to choose. But one should not grab them without analysing the pros and cons. The PDCA (plan, do, check, act) cycle (Deming's wheel) should be applied to one's personal life also. Planning alone is not enough. One needs to have a clear focus. Similarly, aspirations alone are not enough to achieve one's goal. One should ponder upon the pros and cons. In case, the aim misfires, one should not get dejected and think of committing suicide. The thumb rule for transition is: have a plan, be focussed, keep check on your finances and be careful in decision-making.
