YOUR FABRIC A visitor at the 37th India International Garment Fair at Pragati Maidan

Are you dreaming of gorgeous apparel, beaded garments, designer wear and all, then the 37th India International Garment Fair (IIGF) is the place for you. The Fair is on till this Thursday evening at Pragati Maidan. Held twice a year, it is arguably India's largest fashion forum, which aims to promote India's garment exports.

It's a one-stop shop where one gets to see the works of different exporters for the spring-summer season, 2007.

Growing success

Says Qaiser Shamim, Joint Secretary (Exports), who inaugurated the Fair, "Over the years, the Fair has proved to be a great success. This time we have 395 export houses from different parts of India. Last time the number of buyers shot up by 86 per cent. This time we are expecting more. We have set a target of 9.5 billion dollars against 8.2 billion dollars earned through exports last year."

A wide range of garments ranging from high fashion and occasion wear to lingerie and sportswear is on display. The organisers have taken keen interest in the decoration of the stalls. Some have given their stalls the rustic charm of a village while others have given them a modern look. One unusual stall, which is attracting visitors, is patterned on a coffee shop exhibiting designer clothes.

Business and promotion

Vijay Agarwal, Chairman, Apparel Export Promotion Council, hopes to achieve great success from the Fair, both in terms of business and promotion of India-made garments. Qaiser reiterates that government exports are providing the largest chunk of textile exports. "The success of Indian exporters in the recently held Hong Kong Fashion Week proves the point." He emphasises the importance of exports not only in terms of financial turnover but also in creating job opportunities and showcasing Indian talent.

Beyond business, for the common man, the Fair offers a glimpse of the latest trends in world fashion and how India is contributing to them.
