It's raining music

GV Centre kicks off its new season with a performance by Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia and tabla player Anuradha Pal

POWERHOUSE PERFORMERS Chaurasia and Anuradha

If Coimbatore was introduced to rib-tickling English plays and got to enjoy the pulsating music of Bikram Ghosh, Ranjit Barot and Amit Heri and the swaying dance movements of Madhu Heri and Attakkalari, it has one organisation to thank — the G.V. Centre for Performing Arts.

The centre starts its Season 06'-07' on July 30 at Shivanjali auditorium with a concert by flautist Hariprasad Chaurasia and internationally acclaimed female tabla player Anuradha Pal.

The duo has performed across the world to rave reviews.

Over the years, Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia has developed a style that respected tradition but was full of innovation.

He has won several awards, including the Padma Bhushan.

He has collaborated with several western musicians, including John McLaughlin and Jan Gabarek, and has also composed music for a number of Indian films.

Anuradha is a disciple of the Late Ustad Alla Rakha and Ustad Zakir Hussain. She has performed extensively in India, the U.S., U.K., Europe, Australia, Japan and the far-east with top ranking musicians.

Women power

In 1996, she formed India's only all-female percussion-based instrumental and vocal fusion group called `Stree Shakti'. It has performed extensively in India and the U.K. Their album, "Stree Shakti' became one of the best selling classical albums in 2001. Over the past four years, GV programmes have created a new market for live performances.

Urban entertainment

This year, they plan to bring in more such urban entertainment, featuring talked-about artists from India and abroad.

Membership is open for this season. Individual membership costs Rs. 2,500 and includes tickets for a couple for all five shows. A corporate package is also available. For details, call 0422-2575548 or 98434-66563.
