Shake a leg, the Shiamak way

Your exercise routine need not be boring. Spice it up with some jazz

FUN TIME Dancing to a different tune.

The non-stop laughter of kids filled the corridors of Krishnanjali Sindhi Sadhan in R.S.Puram as they started shaking their legs and hands in joy.

A dance workshop by Shiamak Davar's Institute for the Performing Arts was in progress and it was all about sweating it out, the fun way. "For us, dance is a form of exercise. Our workouts are jazz oriented and one starts burning calories without even realising it because the workouts are packed with so much fun," says Lester Fernandes, instructor.

As the kids (seven to 11 years) got ready to learn jazz, Lester kept their energy levels going by asking them to swing like a tree.

Like a picnic

"We want to make sure that it's like a picnic. Instead of asking them to exercise, just tell them `Let's go cycling and swimming.' They enjoy it," he adds.

When you ask the kids to sit like a mouse, show off their muscle power like a lion, scratch like a monkey and scream like Tarzan, who's complaining?

The workshop is aimed at introducing Shiamak's style of dance to Coimbatoreans and getting their feedback. "It is an experiment to get the feel of Coimbatore. The Bollywood influence is inevitable in our dance movements because our style is more Western. We need to get the kids to know about us. We start off with Bollywood actors, for instance Hrithik Roshan — why he is a good dancer and why his dance movements are different. Because, kids relate to actors," Lester adds.

Jazz movements beginning with a floor workout followed by a standing workout are a fun way of doing stretch exercises. "At the end of it, you don't even realise that it's a workout," he adds. For the adults (12 years and above) it was more of Bollywood jazz. The focus of the workshop was to send the message that physical fitness is important. "To shine in any field, you need to be fit and healthy. Such dance routines serve as a stress buster that helps you recharge your batteries," he adds.

Besides, it also builds confidence and teamwork.

"We call jazz fun workout — 30 minutes of upper body movement, lower body movement and 30 minutes of complete dancing. You get so much in return, most importantly, practical knowledge on what you are learning," Lester adds.
