Introduction

Epicurean Enterprises specialises in supplying meals to industries and institutions

Rarely have I seen such passion and gusto in the preparation and supply of meals to industries and institutions. For the publicity-shy "DPD", who is behind this venture, hospitality is his life-blood.

He genuinely believes in "the art and joy of good living". A true Epicurean! Darayes P. Dalal, a hospitality veteran of four decades, is the promoter of this company. The director of the company, N. S. Udayakumar handles the day-to-day operations, financial planning and works along with Dalal on expansion.

Fittingly named Epicurean Enterprises Pvt. Ltd, this company provides Total Facilities Management (TFM), with a focus on catering in the institutional and industrial segment.I was delighted with the pre-plated continental meal (Rs. 80 to Rs. 120). Even the limited thali meal (Rs.12 to Rs. 24) had me enjoying the freshness of ingredients and the variety of flavours. The menus keep changing.

Since I haven't actually eaten these on site, I am not qualified to comment on how they taste there, especially when more than 20,000 meals are prepared and served by the company round-the-clock everyday at various industrial/institutional locations.

"Epicurean's cutting edge is `responsiveness'. We study and evaluate client requirements and respond speedily to them," says Udayakumar. "We believe in being steadfast in service and measuring up to every changing need in most trying environs and circumstances."

It's no wonder that from a small beginning of two contracts and a turnover of Rs. 95 lakhs in 1999, Epicurean has achieved a turnover of Rs 9.75 crores (by March 2006) with the establishment of new branches at different locations in the country and newly added clients such as Nokia and Celebrity Fashions (Indian Terrain). It has also have received ISO 9001: 2000 certification. Interestingly, apart from catering, the company also provides TFM — Total Facilities Management — including housekeeping, horticulture, electro mechanical preventive maintenance and other allied services. But that is a different story.
