`Krishna Vamsi is Prof. Higgins to me'

Charmme scoffs at rumours and sets the record straight

MAKING A STATEMENT Charmme's look in `Style' was much talked about

The rain leaves behind a zillion drops outside her car window. Charmme is seated inside listening to the gentle rhythm; she is also plugged into the I-Pod when a colleague greets her. He enquires if she had bought herself a house in Hyderabad. She smiles, nods and thinks of an answer. Meanwhile, he prods her showing genuine concern, "Do it fast, the land price is soaring, otherwise you will regret not having a shelter in Hyderabad." As he leaves, Charmme flashes that million-dollar smile. She has lost 10 kilos for Rakhi and looks every bit an enchantress she plays on screen.

Charmme has come of age showing remarkable maturity with her recent performances. Tell her that and she quips, "In this industry, when you climb a mountain, you actually reach the foot of another mountain. So I'm there and I've to start climbing all over again."

Charmme sends up a prayer of thanks for the variety of roles that are coming her way effortlessly. Not surprising though, considering the industry vouches for her talent. She smiles at that but adds, "There is so much lobbying for roles. I remember before the release of Sri Anjeneyam, I had signed quite a few movies and was dumped soon after . Despite all this, I manage to get good work because I think God is on my side. Also, at the end of the day, hard work pays. I have signed four films and will announce them soon, but I am committed to six films every year and I hope at least half of them become a hit."

About her role in Pournami and her costumes in Style the unpretentious actress says, "Though Pournami flopped, I got a fair share of appreciation and I did what was required of me in the movie. The film is close to my heart, my accident notwithstanding. As an actress I moved quite a few notches higher. And working in Style was memorable. The baggy pants, short shirt was actually worn by me at the Mass party at a nightclub. Lawrence had spotted me there. He then called up to tell me about my role in Style and said that he wanted the same look. Little did I know that it would be such a hit."

The conversation then swings in measured tones towards Krishna Vamsi, her favourite director and there are no sharp glares. Instead she breaks into an excited monologue. "If people are indulging in mindless banter let them, I love it. In fact, if people don't gossip about me then I would be depressed. If people talk it means I'm happening. Krishna Vamsi is Prof. Higgins to me, he's made me a star and I am indebted to him."
