To wear or not

SAFETY FIRST Is the proposed rule for keeps this time round?

They love the helmet, they love it not. With successive governments having dilly-dallied over the compulsory helmet rule, that nonsensical game young lovers play seems to best describe the prevalent feelings about the issue. The latest in a long line of decisions, which came about middle of last month, promised to put the rule in place by August 1. What's more, the rule also boldly proposed that pillion riders would also have to wear one. However, as the deadline approaches, there once again seem to be doubts about the whether it will apply to pillion riders.

Is the Government in the right when it enforces the compulsory helmet rule? Do Bangaloreans want formal legislation on what is essentially a matter of personal safety?

RAKESH MEHAR does a dipstick survey as Bangalore stands on the threshold of the new rule.

There are many other issues of road safety such as traffic congestion that the Government should pay more attention to. This is simply a way of making money through fines. It should not be enforced.

It is high time the Government enforced the helmet rule. It is very necessary for twowheeler riders. As it is being done in the interest of the safety of the individual, the Government should not delay.

I have been wearing a helmet for the last four years, and am all for the rule. It is a necessary rule, but the Government has not had the political will to enforce it. It should do so now.

Sanjay

Relationship Manager

This really has nothing to do with the Government. People should realise themselves that they must wear helmets. But the rule is necessary because people won't wear one unless there is a rule and a fine.

It is good that the Government has finally promised to enforce the rule.

Helmets are definitely necessary. Many people don't wear one now simply because the rule is not yet in place.

Rakesh
Team manager

The Government should not delay the rule at any cost. The inordinate delay has been purely because of politics, with the helmet lobby influencing the decision. It should be made compulsory soon.

Sharath
MCA graduate

Helmets are basically for our safety, so the Government should enforce the rule. The delay has been because of red tape. The Government must ensure that doesn't block the rule this time.

The Government should not delay the imposition of the helmet rule. The delay of so many years has been unnecessary, and it is better that the rule come out immediately. It is absolutely necessary.

I think all riders should be made to wear helmets. But it is not right to make pillion riders also wear them. I will have to buy a helmet just because I ride on a bike once in a way. That is not necessary.
