As the river flows

The Pothancavu temple offers travellers a place where they can meditate and take in some natural beauty

PANORAMIC VIEW The Kunti river which flows silently

The lone banyan tree provides a respite for weary travellers. Its cool shade greets you as you climb a flight of broken steps leading to a deserted temple.

Called Pothankavu and located in Mannarkadu, Palakkad, Kerala, the traditional South Indian temple is in a sad state of neglect. But the stillness of the place is just right for those who want to meditate or simply drink in the wonders of Nature.

One can watch the river Kunti flow by. Surrounded by all shades of green on both the banks, the river waters reflect the blue of the sky. A panoramic view that provides for several Kodak moments.

The silence of the valley is disturbed only by the gurgling sounds of the river as it flows through a deep forest. The mountains in the distance, known as the `Silent Valley,' lend a picturesque background to the blue sky.

As the heat is oppressive, I decide to take a dip in the river. Carefully treading along the crude steps leading down to the river, I gingerly feel the water, which is icy cool.

According to a local resident, the water is said to have medicinal properties. If you can't swim, you can spend time counting the pebbles in the crystal clear water or if you are a bookworm, you can leaf through some gripping novel. And if you are too tired, you can close your eyes and take a nap in the lap of Nature.

As the sun sets, a cold wind begins to blow. Silent Valley merges with the darkening sky. A couple of boys warn us that a storm is brewing and to be wary of flash floods. I, however, choose to stay. The moonlight plays on the water and the pebbles shine. The scene is so perfect that it can bring out the poet in you.

The solitude in Pothankavu creates a mood of celebration. There will be theyyams, Thiras, Poothams and Vela kali.

How to get there

Mannarkadu is 40 km from Palakkad junction on the way to Silent Valley. Alight at Kodathipadi junction after you reach Mannarkadu.

Hire an auto for the remaining two km to Pothankavu. Ensure you take food and plenty of water.
