Films from Germany
The Goethe-Institut, Max Mueller Bhavan, on C.M.H. Road, is presenting a retrospective of 12 films directed by Helmut Käutner over four weekends from August 4 to 26. Helmut's films are synonymous with romance, melodrama, humour and wartime conflict. Helmut's cinematic achievement began in the late 1930s. One of his first movies was Romance in a Minor Key, based on a novel by Maupassant. After the war, Helmut became more of a political director. He reminded the audience of the horrors of the Nazi regime and he was aghast at the thought of a border in the middle of Germany, even before the Wall was built. He reflected intensely on the atmosphere of the times (Sky without Stars), and indeed many of his films deal with contemporary history.
Käutner directed costume films, which enhanced his popularity in Germany in the '50s (Ludwig II, The Lieutenant of Köpenick).
The screening begins with Goodbye, Franziska! on August 4, 6.30 p.m., Romance in a Minor Key on August 5, 4 p.m. Those Days, The Last Brigade, The Devil's General, Sky Without Stars, Under the Bridges and The Affairs of Julie are some of the other films that are chosen for the screening.
The films are open to all and seating is on first-come, first-served basis. All films are on DVD with English sub-titles. For details, call 25205305/06/07/08-203.
