Introduction

There's a variety of homemade food and services available in Chennai

Slurprises? Would this word adequately describe the yummy surprises that Chennai served me when I visited it this weekend? Not entirely, because some of the surprises were practical and had a homely touch — from simple podis to packed meals in dabbas. Please take a look at the accompanying photograph. You may not be able to see the food but what you can see is some of Chennai's talent in the `home food' zone. They are the ones who telephoned or emailed the "GoodFoodline" or were recommended by other readers for their food or food services, we invited them to the "GoodFoodline tasting session" and here's the result.

We conducted the session at the Chola Sheraton. The general manager, George Verghese, was kind enough to allow us to troop in carrying dabbas of all shapes and sizes. A superb presentation of patisserie was made by the hotel's two chefs, Philip Jeyaraj and Hormuzdyr Gabba. I tasted the food and had interesting chats. Be it with the chefs or with the three sisters-in-law team (Bharathi, Rajeshwari and Janaki) who make tasty podis. Jaya Udhay makes Continental food and also desserts including those for her husband's Kairali restaurants.

Homemade tiffin dabbas never fail to excite me, priced at Rs. 35 and upwards, many such facilities are available in the city, they include those provided by Satish Kumar Choudhary, Radha Kannan, Ashok of Quality Tiffins, Latha Vedachalam and Chandni Rajagopal, who were at the session. Some of them also cater to weddings and high teas.

I really enjoyed the homemade gramflour payasam and the chakaraipongal made by Lakshmi. Anu Bhathija's Sindhi curry was equally delicious. Chef Sudhakar not only bakes but also conducts classes in bakery and chocolate making. Crishanthi Manoharan makes "love cakes". I tasted Fathima's jams, Geeta Nagendran's robustly spiced "Chicken makhanwalla" and was delighted to hear about the health benefits of podis from Rama Gopalakrishnan, who also makes a tomato jam with a whisper of lime.

Want to know more about each of them? Keep watching this space in the weeks to come.

P.S. Yet another delicious aspect of the "Good Foodline tasting session" was the wonderful way in which each participant was accompanied by his or her family. Sharing and caring excite me more than food.
