Winners in the recent All India Railway meet hold promise in coming days

Sampath Nathan

South Central Railway has taken a step in the right direction by recently recruiting four talented power lifters who are expected to garner more medals for the team in the forthcoming railway, national and All India meets says the SCR weightlifting coach Sampath Nathan.

The four lifters namely K. Suresh from Visakhapatnam , Chandrappa from Karnataka, Ch.Krishna and N.A. Samjad from Chennai all managed to bag medals in the recent All India Railway power lifting meet which was held at the RRC indoor stadium in Secunderabad. While Suresh got a bronze in the 52 kg category, Chandrappa bagged a silver in the 56 kg class and Krishna a bronze in the same weight category while Samjad got a bronze in the 82.5 kg category. According to the coach these boys could form the nucleus of a good team in the near future.

"They are all very talented juniors and with hard work they can go far," he says. "And whatever they have achieved now has been with very little practice. That was because they joined very recently and have not had the time to put in an adequate amount of training after joining our units," he adds.

Sampath Nathan is a coach with many years of experience behind him. An NIS coach from the 1981-82 batch Sampath has trained weightlifters including several medal winners in railway and national meets. Recently one of his trainees T.K. Pandian bagged a gold in the 94 kg category.

"However, for power lifting we have to train the lifters in a different way since this sport requires more power whereas in weightlifting the focus is more on speed and technique," says the coach. "It would be important also to look out for women who can take part in the meets since sooner or later a women's competition may also be introduced. At present the sport is in its nascent stage in the railway meets. The one conducted at Secunderabad was only the third of its kind. The earlier meets were conducted in Mumbai and at the ICF premises last year," he says.

Since Andhra Pradesh has produced several notable power lifters in the past, the coach feels that there is plenty of talent available in the state. If this talent is spotted and developed in a systematic manner, then the state's power lifters, the sport as well as the railways will benefit from such a move.
