Subroto Chattopadhyay on Saregama's Royalty Management Programme

GOING DIGITAL Subroto Chattopadhyay

These days, Subroto Chattopadhyay seems to be preoccupied with a single topic — Royalty Management Programme (RMP). Although Saregama's RMP has been implemented in a particular form, it will take a little more time to attain completion. And when it does, it is expected to disclose online "full and accurate information on sales (relating to physical and digital forms of music) to artistes," make timely royalty payments every month through a bank and clear the "arrears" by disbursing pending royalties to all artistes around the country who have worked with Saregama.

Considering his total interest in this project, it was not surprising that the managing director of Saregama India utilised a substantial portion of his time in Chennai to tell the media how the RMP evolved and what can be expected of it.

The RMP hinges on its namesake, a software called `Royalty Management Programme' which was developed internally. SAP is slated to be incorporated and the final product would be a portal that is likely to be large in its spatial extent and have a broad range of application.

"It will be the largest entertainment portal with varied features. There will be sites dedicated to popular stars and using his Unique Identification Number (UIN), every artiste can log in and check updated information pertaining to music sales." To enhance convenience, once all accounts are established, Saregama will tie up with a banking major.

With the advent of sophisticated technology, "the entire entertainment space is getting more exciting" and the digital sales of music (in the form of ringtones and downloads) has caught up well and truly with the physical. "As Saregama will conscientiously pay royalty on the digital sales as well, it is working in close coordination with various national agencies."

While the RMP will help the company "gauge the success levels of the music it produces", it is also "a way to thank the community of artistes who have helped us scale great heights."
