Keeping the runs coming

A blitzkrieg by Coimbatore batsmen ensured an easy win for the district in the under-13 cricket tournament organised by the TNCA

STUCK TO THE CREASE Karthik.

Roller coaster rides usually take a few minutes. But, this one lasted for more than 351 minutes. It started at a blistering pace from the blade of Srivardhan (93 runs) and ended up with a record fourth-wicket partnership worth 230 runs between Anirudh (150 not out) and S. Karthik (121).

Host Coimbatore made the best use of the batting brilliance of this trio to carve out an innings and 359 runs victory over Thanjavur in the opening stage of the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association inter-district under-13 cricket tournament at the SNR Sons grounds last weekend.

A batsman's pitch

The pitch was an important factor. It had lots of runs in it. But, the visiting batsmen looked like sitting ducks in a shooting gallery. They only managed scores of less than 50 in both innings. Hariprasad, who came good with figures of five for 11 and three for 12, bowled his heart out for the home team. So did Bhavik and Surendar.

On the other hand, the Coimbatore batsmen, despite chasing a poor first innings score, played with an attacking mindset from the start. The right-left combination of Anirudh and Karthik played the innings of their life. The former was clinical when the ball drifted into his pads and murderous against anything bowled short. Most of the runs came without breaking a sweat.

Record stand

Anirudh, a class seven student of SBOA MHSS in Chokkampudur, created an all-time record in the under-13 boys category with his match-winning efforts. Coached by A.G. Guruswamy, the joint secretary of the Coimbatore District Cricket Association (CDCA), Anirudh in his opening match against Nagapattinam notched a quick fire 51.

Not satisfied with his efforts, the right-handed batsman vowed to slam a century in his next match.

And, he did that in style. After reaching his century mark, Guruswamy, the coach of the district team as well, gave Anirudh another 10 overs to make merry.

The plucky youngster squeezed the maximum out of it to plunder 50 runs off just 24 balls. The final 50 included six hits to the fence.

Anirudh is hell bent on scoring a double hundred in the forthcoming semi-final clash. The men at the helm of affairs of the CDCA believe he has the ability to do so.

Strong show

Anirudh.

Karthik, like Anirudh, showed a lot of promise in building a big partnership.

If it was not for his support, the team could have crumbled under pressure.

Coached by Ethiraj at the GVG Paper Mills grounds in Udumalpet, Karthik used his head to a great extent. He never wavered and punished all those loose deliveries that came his way.

Great advantage

Son of Sivadasan, a former district cricketer, Karthik has been enjoying the best of the facilities and training at home as well in the ground.

His uncle U.R. Radhakrishnan is a former India player, and it is quite natural that cricket is in his blood.

The class VIII student of the Srinivasa Vidyalaya MHSS in Udumalpet is determined to make it big. With appreciation and support flowing in from the various district associations, the dynamic duo, many hope, will reach the top with ease.
