BEAT ME IF YOU CAN! A Horlicks Wiz Kids competition in progress

Haven't we all heard this - All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy? And if you are one of the believers of this ageless adage, then you are one with the multinational company, GlaxoSmithKline (GSK), simply known as the producer of Horlicks. GSK has come up with an interesting 25-city contest for school children called, Horlicks Wiz Kids 2006. If you have a kid at home, you might be already aware of it as only this past week, the Delhi chapter of Wiz Kids had taken place at the Apeejay School, Noida.

The inter-school competition for Classes III and IV with as many as 22 categories, claimed to be the "largest ever in the field", has already covered 13 cities since this mid-July, says Subhojit Sen, spokesperson for GSK. "The competition is on two levels - city and national. Two kids from each city, that is 50 contestants, will qualify from the city level for the national finals to be held in Bangalore this November," says Sen. Those selected for the national level will go through various training sessions spanning from psychological to leadership building to communication to confidence building. They will also do a few community projects.

Activity-driven

"Academics have always been the sole point of focus for Indian kids but it alone is not everything in a child's life. Activities take so much of their interest and so we have thought out a platform where they can showcase their talent in fields other than academics," Sen explains the essence behind the project. The categories span from various activity-related competitions such as music, literature, dance, singing, writing, speaking, creativity, art and design.

"So far, as many as two lakh kids have taken part in the competition," he states. The awards for the winners come in the form of a four-member team called Horlicks Wiz Team, which will represent many other competitions in India and abroad."It has been a dream project for us. All we want to do is produce children who can be future leaders of great character and personality. That will be the final prize of the competition," sums up Sen. The finals of the making of these "future leaders" can be watched on Hungama TV in November, the dates of which are not fixed yet.

Meanwhile, R.K. Films and Media Academy is seeking applications for courses in acting, editing, dubbing and photography, etc.

All those who have done matriculation are eligible and can go to the site www.rakfma.com for details.
