Raise a voice
In today's world, dreams, not products, are sold; better marketing and packaging is more stressed upon than the quality and quantity of the product. As a result, consumers often feel cheated. But how many of us take the situation seriously and raise a voice against it? How many of us go and file a PIL against the financial irregularities of our banking branch or the shopkeeper who charged us one rupee more than the maximum retail price? Why do we take a backseat when it comes to fighting such malpractices, which directly affect our wallet?
To talk upon such issues, the Consumer Voice organised a seminar at the India Habitat Centre in New Delhi this week. It was presided over by Bejon Misra, CEO, Consumer Voice. Misra, who initiated a consumer movement in Jamshedpur in 1983, is also running a campaign called Jago Grahak Jago. Also present were some consumers who felt cheated by banks, telecom companies or neighbourhood shopkeepers, and wanted to know the right approach to raise their voices against such social evils.
Speaking at the event, Misra pointed out different laws made to prosecute such people and the precautions one should take while filing a PIL. "Whenever in problem, first collect evidence; don't work on emotions. Moreover, you must be able to argue your own case," he pointed out. He even lashed out at some of the Indian banks and insurance companies, which are maintaining double standards in terms of the facilities they provide in India and abroad. So now if you have any problem you can dial a toll-free number 1800-11-4000, Monday to Saturday between 9.30 and 5.30. You can also mail your queries/problems at www.consumer-voice.org.
