"How can there be a complete development of the body, of the emotions, of the capacity to think deeply and widely, so that the whole being becomes astonishingly alive to everything about it, to every challenge, to every influence? And is that possible, in a world like this, a world where technological knowledge is all-important, where making money, being an engineer or an electronic expert is assuming such importance? Is it possible to be sensitive?" asked philosopher Jiddu Krishnamurthy of the purpose of education.

Centre For Learning (CFL), located 40 km off Bangalore in the village Varadenahalli on Magadi Road, was started by teachers who wanted to pursue these questions and explore different approaches to education. They have been striving to combine these larger philosophical questions with questions of livelihood and survival that can't be ignored in today's context.

CFL's curriculum has always had special emphasis on sensitivity to natural surroundings. Last year senior students of the centre worked with experts to perform an audit of the energy needs on the campus, with the target to gradually decrease use of grid power, replacing it in stages with solar power. To raise money for this students of CFL are doing a sponsorship walk of 35 km to school, called Walk to School Campaign, on August 12. CFL plans to contribute 25 per cent of the money raised from the walk to two neighbouring village schools in Varadenahalli.

The walk starts at 6.30 a.m. on August 12 outside the Bangalore University gates. The route will be through the university, Ullal and Byadarahalli, Magadi Road till Seegehalli cross, BWSSB road till Tippagondanahalli, and again along Magadi Road till Varadenahalli village at the 39th km. stone. Younger students are walking shorter distances along the same route. Over 150 children and adults will be participating in the walk. Satyanarayana of the Karnataka Athletes Association, along with some athletes, is expected participate in the walk.
