`Don't hinder, if you can't help'

People at an accident spot must focus on rushing the victim to a hospital, says Ramya Ravindran

Ramya Ravindran

Why are there so many hit-and-run accidents? I feel it is because of the reaction of the crowd that gathers at the spot. What irks me is their attitude. They seem to be more intent on arguing and even coming to blows with the offender rather than helping the victim. Meanwhile, the golden hour passes by when the victim's life could have been saved. The offender, who may actually be willing to help, flees the scene fearing for his life.

I once saw a taxi driver hit a cyclist and stop to offer help. The cyclist suffered bleeding injuries. The driver was anxious to rush him to the nearest hospital, but the crowd would have none of it. They demanded an explanation, oblivious to the plight of the victim.

People seem to derive excitement even from an accident scene. The onlookers may choose to waste time, but every minute is precious for the victim. If the crowd scares the offender way, who will take the victim to hospital? None. Everyone is afraid of the legal angle to the problem and chooses to stay away. They discuss who should take the victim and who could, but nobody volunteers.

I am not asking anyone to abandon whatever he or she is doing and step in to help. All I ask them is not to be a hindrance, if they cannot be of help.

An accident is an accident. It is not pre-meditated. Stay level-headed and don't blindly follow the mob. If the offenders want to help, let them. The victim needs immediate help, not an argument won.
