WAVING A MAGIC WAND P.C. Sorcar Young
Say Provas Chandra Sorcar and nobody would have heard of him. But say P. C. Sorcar, and it would at once ring a bell as he is the man who is known for keeping audiences spellbound. But now it is his son Pouroosh's turn to enthral audiences. Pouroosh ( P. C. Sorcar young) will perform at Kalaivanar Arangam from today for Priya Murthy's Amman Arts Academy and will be in the city for a month.
P. C. Sorcar (young) is not just a magician par excellence; he is a mathematician, musician, an accomplished aviator and an Indian classical ballet dancer as well.
Sorcar completed his master's degree from Calcutta University. He plays the sitar and is under the tutelage of Pandit Asit Ganguly. He composes most of the music for his magic show - "Indrajal."
He is also a private and commercial pilot. He learnt classical dancing from the renowned Uday Shankar and Kalu Shankar. He composed and choreographed a ballet on the life of Emperor Ashoka. Despite his versatility, why did he choose magic as a profession?
"It is because of my parents. They always wanted me to become a magician. So I learnt magic from my father when I was only five and I accompanied him in all his shows. I belong to the 8th generation of magicians in my family."
Sorcar young has toured the world and has received various awards for his amazing skills. What significance does Chennai hold for him?
"I am visiting Chennai after nearly eight years. I performed here in 1998. I remember driving a motorbike blindfolded from Kalaivanar Arangam to Gandhi statue and back on the eve of the show. The feat was appreciated by the media and the public. This time I am going to ride a Bajaj motorbike blindfolded on Sunday (August 27) on the beach road. I am looking forward to the show for another reason. My son P. C. Sorcar (master) is to perform with me for the first time. Again, Chennai is special to me because I got my flying licence from here."
