Cultural encounters

Tracing Indo-German cultural links over the past 500 years

The Goethe-Institut, Max Mueller Bhavan Chennai, in cooperation with Madras Musings, Satya Nilayam, German Returnees Association and South Asia Institute-Ruprecht-Karls-Universitat, Heidelberg, presents an international conference on "Cultural Encounters in South India". It will be held from August 16 to 18, 9.30 a.m. to 5.30 p.m., at Residency Towers, Sir Thyagaraya Road, T. Nagar.

With the first German landing on the South Indian coast 500 years ago, the foundation stone was laid for interaction between the two cultures. But the significant step towards intercultural development was taken when the first German missionaries landed in India 200 years later, not because of their religious intent, but because of their interest in linguistics and in Indian customs and traditions.

The conference will not only acknowledge the missionary movement but also deal with different areas such as education, medicine, art and urban development.

The conference will be inaugurated on August 16, 7 p.m.
