A line-up of programmes to mark Madras Day
|
To mark Madras Day which falls on August 22, several events have been planned by various organisations between August 20 and 27. Here's a round-up: A music contest has been organised by VIBA. All you have to do is compose an anthem one to one-and-a-half minute long in English and/or Tamil, which will describe the city and its history.
The music can be of any genre with lyrics that talk of the beauty of Chennai, its culture, music, tradition and people. Entry is free, but registration is a must.
The contest is open to professionals, amateurs and even college bands. Each team should not have more than seven members. Any instrument can be used and the lyrics must be artistic. The best anthem will be chosen by a panel of judges comprising prominent citizens, and certificates will be awarded to all participating teams. The rights of the recorded CDs will be with the organiser.

Open quiz
A quiz will be conducted on August 27 at the Sri Dakshinamurthy Auditorium, P. S. Higher Secondary School, R. K. Mutt Road, Mylapore. Teams of two can participate in this open quiz for which no registration is required. A written preliminary round will be held at 2 p.m. The quiz master is Avinash Mudaliar. A rolling trophy will be awarded to the winning team while there are special prizes for the best senior citizens' team (55 years and above), the best all-woman team and the best school team. Seating is on a first-come-first-served basis. A Tamil quiz will be conducted on August 26 at the same venue at 1.30 p.m.. It is open only to Tamil medium school students. photo contest
A mobile phone cam photo contest is also being organised by Univercell. The theme of the photograph can be any aspect of Chennai historical buildings, idli shops or even a flower seller. The picture can be shot on any model of a mobile phone camera and each participant can send only one entry. The photo may be e-mailed to contest@univercell.in with a suitable caption.
Along with the entry, the following details have to be furnished: name of the participant; model of mobile phone; where it was bought; phone number and complete postal address. You can also send your photograph to Madras Day Photos, c/o Geetha Durai, 281, TTK Road, Alwarpet, Chennai-18.

Nature walk
Nizhal, a trust that promotes tree culture, is organising two Nature walks inside the Theosophical Society, Adyar on August 26 (8 a.m.-9.30 a.m.) and at the Guindy National Park on August 27 (8 a.m.-9.30 a.m.). The walks are open to all but restricted to 25 persons. Registration is on a first-come-first-served basis. For details, call 98407 44453 after 4 p.m.
Marina moods
A photography competition is being organised on the theme `Marina Moods.' Participants can take a picture of anything that catches their eye on the stretch of the Marina from the Anna Samadhi end to the Light House end. The photos must be in colour, of size 8" by 6".
