STORY WITH A MESSAGE From "Paramaartha Guru"
Koothu-p-Pattarai, the 30-year-old Tamil theatre repertory in the city, will premiere its latest play "Paramaartha Guru" at Top Storey at the Alliance Francaise, 40, College Road, Nungambakkam, from this evening till August 20.
The story of Paramaartha Guru, written by Veeramamunivar in the 18th Century, has been adapted for the stage by N. Muthuswamy and is directed by Aparna Gopinath. The tale of the guru and his five disciples crossing a river is hilarious and provides some great entertainment.
Veeramamunivar was what Father Constantius Joseph Beschi, the Italian priest of the Jesuit order who came to India in 1710, came to be known as by the local people. Beschi worked in India for four decades and mastered Tamil, Telugu, Sanskrit and Hindi. His motive behind writing the historic `Paramaarta Gooroo' was to make the Tamil language available to other Jesuits, so that they could connect to the people in their own language.
Koothu-p-Pattarai, founded in 1977 by Sangeet Natak Akademi winner and playwright N. Muthuswamy, deals with contemporary themes using traditional stage idioms. KPP has been functioning as a full-time Tamil theatre repertory since 1987 and has over 60 major productions to its credit.
Donor passes priced at Rs. 100 (Rs. 75 for students on production of identity card) will be available at the venue. For bookings call 55373633 or 24793301. For door delivery call 42244224.
