Patricia Cornwell
TimeWarner Books
£2.99
Those interested in this popular genre will know that Patricia Cornwell created Dr. Kay Scarpetta, with whom it is said she grew a little bored and went on to create another series starring police chief Judy Hammer. This Scarpetta novel comes after a long break and proves to be quite a read.
Dr. Scarpetta's forensic expertise comes to her call in "persuading the dead to speak to her", and in this fast-paced narrative that sometimes takes the reader by surprise, the ability to make the dead speak is as essential as the police procedures that mark the Judy Hammer method. This is an interesting book. If you like a good thrill at other people's expense, here it is.
A Call to Honour
Jaswant Singh
Rupa
Rs. 495
Jaswant Singh. The name tells a story even before we begin to read and the subtitle In Service of Emergent India gives you the sub-text! This "evocative account about a crucial period in India's history" is a part-autobiographical, part-historical narrative kind of book.
It starts with Singh's childhood in Rajasthan and ends with the present "Whether I am in the government or not, the sound of the stone mason's hammer constantly striking that chisel, sculpting our many tomorrows must continue to be heard, `for the house has yet to be built' and we must not stop building it." In between there are many things there is Kargil, there is Kandahar, there is Pakistan, there is America and China and more.
I guess this is one of those books that you should at least look through. The style is not bad and there are some cartoons and the organisation of the material is interesting.
Speeches That Changed the World
Compiled by Cathy Lowne
Bounty Books
£4.99
A nice-looking book that contains about 160 pages of speeches classified under categories such as "Love", "Religion", "War", "Ancient History",etc. The speeches are of a variety wide enough to surprise occasionally, so it's not just another of the usually encountered careless collection.
For example, the Ancient History section has Socrates's famous Apology as well as lesser-known speeches by Pericles and Demosthenes.
The familiar famous abdication speech of Edward VIII is accompanied by Bill Clinton's "I did have a relationship with Ms. Lewinsky" on. You'll also find Pierre Trudeau's " The state has no business in the bedrooms of the nation" here.
Panic
Jeff Abbott
TimeWarner Books
£6.99
Panic starts with a brutal murder, that shows filmmaker Evan Casher's whole life to have been built on a masquerade his parents had started. Who they actually were and why they had to hide is interesting reading, fast paced, well narrated, and ably plotted. For those with an interest in murder and the thrills of following a trail, tracking down someone while at the same time being tracked, the chilling flashes of the brute nature of life, all of it is here in good shape.
Abbott's writing style is easy to deal with and Panic proves to be as good a read as some of his earlier books Cut and Run and Do Unto Others. Good reading, as I said.
