"Our Cities: The Real and the Imagined" is the theme of a fest
|
Chennai's own documentary film festival, "One Billion Eyes", organised by Prakriti Foundation, began with the screening of Anand Patwardhan's "Bombay: Our City" at Chamiers/Anokhi on Tuesday evening. Starting Wednesday, the action shifts to the theatre at South Indian Film Chamber, near Anna Flyover.
This year's theme, "Our Cities: The Real and the Imagined", will bring Bombay, Benares, Bhopal and Bangalore alive on the screen through over 25 documentaries. "When we first came up with the festival in 2005, the theme was Arts, Activism and Animals," says Ranvir Shah, Founder-Director of Prakriti Foundation. "One Billion Eyes" also features a photo exhibition on the Bhopal Gas Tragedy and a qawwali performance by Laique Quawal at Chamiers/ Anokhi on Chamiers Road on August 15 and 16 respectively. The screening of the films in the competitive section (to be showcased between August 16-19) will begin at 3 p.m. everyday.
The jury for the festival comprises Alka Pande, consultant, arts advisor and curator, Visual Arts Gallery, Indian Habitat Centre, Aditi De, writer, Jean Pascal, director of Alliance Francaise, Chennai and Tim Murari, writer. The award for the Best film will be given at the Museum Theatre on August 20. Ramu Ramnathan's "Cotton 56 Polyester 84", a play directed by Sunil Shanbag, will be staged as a part of the closing ceremony.
