Is radio making waves again?
Personal touch
To watch television you need to take time off. The biggest advantage with radio is that you can continue working as you listen. I have worked in advertising, cinema and theatre, but when I became a radio jockey it seemed like I had come full circle in mass media. When you are addressing the listeners, it's like talking to a close friend. I never start my show with "Hello Chennai", I prefer "Hi, Nanba (friend)". Also, there's a lot more freedom for RJs to be at their imaginative best and showcase their individual skills. Most often, RJs make use of this freedom and humour to convey important social messages. As RJs, we need to keep our eyes and ears open to focus on issues affecting people. Radio has committed listeners. The proof is the amazing response we get for our SMS contests. Accepted that people are taken in by the visual effect of television, but radio is definitely making its presence felt.
