Mane story

Before and after

"It is a piece of art not a wig," he insists. At the recent inauguration of the Farrell Studio at 6A, Wallace Garden, Third Street, Nungambakkam, hairstylist Richard Farrell explained why their hairpieces are different.

His `hair systems', as he calls the hairpieces, are made taking into account the hair density and growth pattern of an individual's hair. "You can live in it," he says. That is, among other things, you can sleep and swim with the hairpiece. In a `system', the hair (sourced from different parts of the world, including Russia and India) is woven into a thin nylon mesh, which is plastered onto the head with a medical adhesive. His method is non-surgical. You can even keep it on for two to six weeks continuously, he claims, and each piece will last for around five years.

The services at his salon are for both men and women. He also has studios in Los Angeles, New York, Chicago and Atlanta. Initially most of his clients were men. Today, around 55 per cent of them are women.

For the hair replacement, you will be required to attend two sessions at the studio. In the first, the hairpiece is designed and in the second, which is after 8 to 12 weeks, the piece is ready to wear.

Richard does not consider the pursuit of a full head of hair frivolous. "They are tools," he says, "like a laptop or a camera. They make you feel whole and confident." Hairstyles also communicate, according to him.
