ROCKIN' ON Shibani Kashyap prefers to be a composer/singer than a mere playback singer
Singer Shibani Kashyap's managed to prove she's not a one-album wonder.
With non-film albums and movie numbers to speak about her talent, the industry was sure she'd be around for a while. But it took one song, Zinda Hoon Main, to ascertain beyond doubt that we'll see more of her.
While in Hyderabad to perform at Underdeck, she tells why she'll never stop concentrating on solo albums.
Zinda and after
I've been inundated with offers for movies. Nevertheless, I am not here to sing 50 songs a year. I compose each song that I sing and hence it takes time. I'd rather be a composer/singer than a mere playback singer.
Coming up
I'm singing for Sanjay Gupta's next as well and Anurag Kashyap's No Smoking, which has John Abraham and others. Each director gives me freedom to compose the way I want.
It started with Sajna in Waisa Bhi Hota Hai, Zinda and my forthcoming songs.
Behind the scenes
I've even been asked to act on and off but I'm better off singing. At the most, I can perform on stage and shoot for my music videos.
Next album
I am taking out time to work on my next album, which will probably be out next year. As always, no two songs in my album will be alike. There will be slow, melodies and dance numbers as well.
Tough act
Survival is tough for singers like me, because you have promotional music videos being made for movies as well.
So you have to be really good to stand out. New singers are way too many. It's good, in a way. Competition keeps me on my toes.
South? Not now
I've had to refuse singing offers from the South because I am totally tied up with Hindi films. Maybe sometime later, I'd love to try singing for Telugu films.
Most of my live performances are in the South and I've observed that people here are more chilled out and respond to music better. I'm not under pressure like in Mumbai while performing.
