At one with the land

The landscape is a cliché, so what

VERSATILE CANVAS L. Narendranath presents the Telangana landscape in its vivid hues

We all hate clichés but can easily relate to them when we see one. L. Narendranath's works do precisely that. It is as clichéd as the environment around us. The Telangana landscape with its simple shepherding folks, the colourfully dressed banjaras, the goats and the rocks form the subject of Narendranath's brush, paints and a few graphic prints. They are on view at Lakshana Art Gallery in Masab Tank till August 22.

What marks out Narendranath's work is his keen eye for detail, sharp delineation and the right colours to match the mood. If the people's dresses are a virtual rainbow of colours then the landscape is just a few shades of brown.

So, what differentiates Narendranath from the so many painters who draw colourful lambadis? Well for one thing, it is his subject matter and how he places it in context and blends it with the landscape.

The presence of goats (in the Telangana lingo they are called potel) and they way they are painted shows the artist's intimate knowledge about the people and their lifestyle.

But it is the etchings and stencilling that shows the artist's virtuosity with his art. It is only with a few strokes and a blank canvas that Narendranath manages to make his social comment.

Hyderabad-based Narendranath who works out of his studio in Seetarambagh has shown his versatility with various subjects but it is the simplicity that is evocative. It is easy to see his simplicity as that of a poster painter but the draughtsmanship that Narendranath brings to etch out his subjects shows his metier as belonging to higher art.
