Worli art

Traditional tribal handicrafts from Maharashtra are on sale at Lavanya

The Worli tribe of Maharashtra are cultivators and gatherers. They have made it their practice to record their daily activities and rituals in the form of line drawings. These are created using rice paste and bamboo twigs in the inside walls of their huts, after they are smeared with cow dung and red mud.

Traditionally, it is the married women who do the paintings as priestesses sing alongside making the entire ritual one of gaiety and festivity. The paintings are replete with symbolism.

An exhibition of this age-old art and craft is being brought to Lavanya, Shivanjali's craft shop at New Thillai Nagar. There will be a sale and display on August 26 and 27 between 10 a.m. and 10 p.m. For details, contact 0422-2438255.
