Life is a song for Nikhil Mathew, who won Vijay TV's Airtel Super Singer contest

HAPPY ENDING Nikhil after he won the contest

His college bus and bike apart, Nikhil Mathew now has one more commuting option — a brand-new Maruti Swift. Much as he takes pride in owning a 1298 cc hatchback, the other reward for his performance in Vijay TV's "Airtel Super Singer" contest should enthuse him more — an opportunity to sing a film song, for which Harris Jeyaraj will compose music. Hearing him sing "Thenrale, Thenrale" and "Ennadi Menatchi," the music director decided the boy from Kerala deserved the top prize.

Nikhil is obviously delighted with this recognition; there have been such moments of glory in the past as well.

In 2004, through another music talent show organised by Vijay TV, he got to sing with Sujatha, Srinvas, Karthik, Srilekha and Timmy Madhukar. Back in Kerala, Nikhil won the singing event at the Kerala State School Youth Festival, three times in a row. And during his under graduate course, he won the singing contest at the Mahatma Gandhi State Youth festival.

Nikhil is grateful to three people for all his achievements — his mother Saly Mathew, for passing on the `singing gene,' his father Dr. A.V. Mathew for the special efforts he took to make Nikhil a singer, and his guru, Amblikuttan, "who first heard me when I was in Class eight and was impressed with what he heard."
